Relief from symptoms of eczema

What causes eczema?

The exact cause of eczema is not known, but it tends to run in families who have a history of eczema, asthma and hay fever.

One of the characteristics of eczema is a disturbance of the barrier function of the skin, which becomes extremely dry and inflamed. This weakens the immune system and makes the skin extremely sensitive to various food and environmental allergens, including harmful bacteria called pathogens.  It is important to know that the presence of pathogens in a human body is normal, but when the human resistance is low, they can start becoming unfriendly and quickly multiply. This bacterial overgrowth further damages the skin and increases the inflammation.

Eczema tends to come and go. Factors that may trigger a flare-up include:

-    Stress
-    Environmental allergens, such as dust mites, moulds, plant pollens, pets, washing powders, soaps and toiletries
-    Food allergies (dairy and wheat products, citrus fruits, eggs, nuts, seafood, chemical food additives, preservatives and colourings)
-    Irritants, such as weather (hot, humid or cold, dry conditions), air conditioning, tobacco smoke and chemicals

Don't wait too long before treating your eczema and skin irritations with Dexem Cream or Scalp lotion.
