What are the symptoms of eczema?

Eczema is characterised by periods of flare-ups and remissions. The symptoms can occur as a brief reaction and may be present for only a few hours or days. In other cases, the symptoms persist over a longer period of time.

The typical symptoms of eczema are:

-    Severe itching (usually not present in other skin rashes)
-    Dry, red skin
-    Skin weeping watery fluid
-    Rough, "leathery", thick skin

Bleeding sores which may become infected by bacteria or viruses

Eczema does not only affect the individual sufferer, but also their family and close friends. Due to the constant itching, babies and children become restless. They cannot sleep, because they constantly scratch the infected area. As a result, the parents do not sleep, become sleep-deprived and sometimes cannot attend work.

Eczema symptoms tend to become less severe over time. For many sufferers, symptoms may mostly disappear, although they will tend to suffer from dry, sensitive skin.
